The malachite kingfisher is found throughout Tanzanian near lakes, ponds, and seasonal pools that have surrounding vegetation. The right upper photo was taken at Lake Duluti (2-15), courtesy of Stephan Schramm; the left upper leucistic bird, in Queen Elisabeth NP-Uganda (10-16), courtesy of Leslie Stoltz. The left lower photo was taken in Tarangire (2-04). All of the other photos were taken along the coast near Ushongo. Note the rufous-orange breast and underparts. Ssp. longirostris with white breast and underparts from Kafue NP (Zambia, #16 in the enlargements) is not found in Tanzania, but is included for comparison; click the photo above to see 16 enlargements.
