Most of these photos of black-backed puffbacks are males. The female has a short white stripe in front of the eye (right 2nd & 3rd rows). Most of these images are ssp. hamatus which has white scapulars and wing edges except the right lower photo which is ssp. affinis, found along the coast (Emayani, 3-14). The displaying left upper bird was seen in Msumbe, courtesy of Miles Paul. The female in hand was seen in the Udzungwa Mountains, courtesy of Dr. Louis A. Hansen. The left lower male was seen in Pembe Abwe (2-09); click it to see seven enlargements including an immature female.
