The brown-hooded kingfisher is a dry-forest bird that feeds on small vertebrates. The male has a black back; the female and immature, brown. The top photo was taken in Dar es Salaam (11-12), courtesy of Anne Outwater. The right lower photo was taken in Olasiti (7-07). The right 2nd row photo is courtesy of Colin Beale. Ssp. vociferans in the 5th row photos (Kafue NP, Zambia, 4-16), is not present in Tanzania but is included for comparison. The other photos were taken in Arusha NP.
