The African pitta is a forest bird that forages on the ground. The upper adult was seen in the Pugu Hills (4-12), courtesy of Tony Evans. The middle adult was in Dar es Salaam (4-12), courtesy of Jan van den Hombergh. The juvenile (3rd row) was seen at Magongo Hill west of Arusha (5-06), courtesy of Anabel Harries. The bottom photo of a green-breasted pitta (Pitta reichenowi) is included for comparison; it has not been recorded in Tanzania, but nearby in Uganda, photo courtesy of Michael Graham.
