The red-collared widowbird was formerly considered to be conspecific with the red-cowled widowbird. The red-cowled widowbird is now treated as a separate species as it has more red in the plumage and the tail length of a male in breeding plumage is shorter. The upper breeding male (Mbeya, 2-12) is courtesy of Robert Barnes; the middle two photos (Mbuyuni Farm-Morogoro, 3-20) are courtesy of Janush Axmann; the bottom photo (Nguu Mountains, 5-22), is courtesy of Per Holmen. |
