A small woodpecker (13 cm), the male and female brown-backed woodpecker have brown backs and brown ear coverts. The crown is red in the male, brown in the female. The left upper bird was seen at Adi Quala (Eritrea, 1-09), courtesy of Jason Anderson; the right upper, Ngorongoro highlands (11-23), courtesy of Isaac Kilusu.
