The African pygmy is smaller that the otherwise similar malachite kingfisher, but note that the blue crown does not extend to the eye, separating it from other blue-crowned kingfishers. The upper photo (Selous,11-17) is courtesy of Claude Medle. The immature (left 3rd row) was seen at Maji Moto, courtesy of Colin Beale; the right 3rd row, Mara River (11-17), courtesy Per Holmen; the right lower, Maasai Mara (9-10), courtesy of Steve Brynes. The other photos were taken at Mahale NP and Minziro. Click the left lower photo to see 9 enlargements.
