The lesser flamingo is dependent on the alkaline lakes of the Great Rift Valley in East Africa and is significantly threatened by the effects of pollution, proposed industrial development and habitat loss at Lake Natron where all East African lesser flamingo breeding occurs. The upper photo (Arusha NP, 11-14) is courtesy of Daniel Townsend. The roadkill photo is courtesy of Munir Virani and the photo with the jackal is courtesy of Fain Zimmerman. The photos were taken at Nanja Dam, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Lake Natron and Arusha NP. Click the photo above to see 27 enlargements.
