Some of these photos show juveniles which are all brown, lacking white on the face, and immatures which are mostly brown. The spur on the carpus of the wing is a rudimentary thumb, lost through digit fusion in most other birds: note the prominent carpal spur in the left 3rd row flight photo, the right lower photo and in slideshow photo #11. The 2nd & 3rd row photos (Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater, 2-17) are courtesy of Karine Van der Vurst. The lower flight photo (Lake Eyasi, 3-13) is courtesy of Paul Oliver. The other photos were taken in Arusha NP, Olasiti, Ngorongoro Crater, Manyara Ranch, Yaida Valley, Katavi, Kake Eyasi and the Okavango delta (Botswana). The photo of the immature with the heron is courtesy of Mike Peterson. Click the photo above to see 15 enlargements.
