A small woodpecker (13 cm), the male and female brown-backed woodpecker have brown backs and brown ear coverts. The crown is red in the male, brown in the female. The upper bird was seen at Adi Quala (Eritrea, 1-09), courtesy of Jason Anderson; the 2nd row photos were taken in the Mbulu mountains (9-22), courtesyof Per Holmen.
